Statement from Minister Heather Humphreys, T.D, on the death of Anthony Cronin

Heather Humphreys, T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has today paid tribute to the renowned poet, novelist and critic, Anthony Cronin, following the announcement of his death.
Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:
“I was very sorry to hear today of the passing of Anthony Cronin.

Anthony loomed large in Ireland’s cultural life, both as a prolific poet and an acclaimed author.  He was also of course well known as a weekly columnist for many years in the Irish Times.

“However, it is perhaps for his cultural activism and his work as an advocate for the artists of Ireland that he will be best remembered.  Anthony was of course a driving force behind the creation of Aosdána, where one of his primary concerns was the welfare of struggling artists, particularly those in their later years.  This concern was typical of a man who continued to make a significant contribution to the public life of this country throughout his life.

“I would like to express my sympathy to his wife Anne and daughter Sarah on their loss.
