Clarification from Minister of State, Seán Kyne T.D., regarding the Irish-language Assistants Scheme
In a statement released this evening, Seán Kyne T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, said that he has sanctioned a grant totalling €508,989 from the 24 September 2016 for Muintearas Teo for the 2016/17 school year to enable them to run the Irish-language Assistants Scheme. The Minister of State said that the allocation of funding for the work carried out by the Assistants themselves hadn’t been cut, but that the administration costs hadn’t been included. The Minister of State said that he has now decided to pay the administration costs for the current school year in the context of information received from Údarás na Gaeltachta that it intends to immediately audit the structure, funding and functions of Muintearas Teo, a subsidiary of the Údarás. The Minister of State said that he hopes that the Assistants can begin work as soon as possible. “In that context, I have decided to sanction a grant of €69,196 for Muintearas for the 2016/17 school year for Seirbhísí Spóirt Chonamara which is run by Muintearas. This grant also covers administration costs, on the same understanding,” said the Minister of State. These grants are equivalent to the amounts sanctioned for both schemes last year.
With regard to including additional schools in the scheme, Minister of State Kyne said that he has asked Department officials to submit recommendations on this to him forthwith.
