Review of Part IV of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended)
The Department convened an expert advisory committee to review the operation of Part IV of the Planning and Development Acts. The committee, which contained public and private sector and NGO representatives, produced a comprehensive report arising from its deliberations which took place from September 2011 to June 2012.

Central to the review process was an effort to seek improvements rather than fundamental alterations to the existing legislation and to critically review the context in which the administration of the legislation operates, both at local authority level and by the State generally. This broad outlook assisted the committee to make wide ranging findings as to the potential of more effective application of Part IV, relevant types of financial assistance and possible mechanisms for improving service delivery by local and State authorities in respect of the historic built environment.

The report can be accessed here.

Review of the Heritage Council
The Public Service Reform Programme (2011) sought a critical review of State Bodies and Agencies, including those funded by the Department. A Review of the Heritage Council was completed in 2012 which recommended that it be retained in a modified and streamlined form. The review concluded that the Heritage Council carries out a range of functions which are not duplicated by other public sector bodies, and which are most usefully carried out at a remove from central government.
